Travis County Commissioners Court
August 31, 2004
Item 38
Consider and take appropriate action on process to fill position of executive
manager of health and human services and veterans services.
>> Commissioner Gomez and I met as your subcommittee on Wednesday.
And we culled through and we thank very much h.r. Of doing the first cut of
simply getting us packets of folks who met the minimum qualifications. With
that we were able to get it down to a short list that we would recommend to
you all of five candidates. Each of them is somebody who lives here in Austin
or the Austin area. So in terms of getting somebody scheduled, if you take
our recommendation on these five persons. They all live locally, we don't
have travel issues, quite frankly I think would it be -- it would be something
simple to schedule as opposed to having to pull in people from out of town,
out of state, dealing with those kinds of issues. We were hoping to convince
you all that we would actually have some time on a Tuesday, what did we say
the 21st, Margaret? I think so.
>> I think it was September 21st that we would hope a good
portion of our budget issues with markup, hearings, tax rates would already
be done, that we could set aside some time that afternoon on September 21st.
To interview the five folks. If we needed follow-up questions, issues, checking
out of credentials, et cetera. We would defer to you. We were being very sensitive
to the fact that we have markup, certainly as soon as the budget is over,
people are wanting to take some well deserved breaks or have things scheduled
of how to get, but we have it down to five names and I think they are all
exceptional.
>> in the past we have used a standard set of questions.
>> uh-huh.
>> as our intention to draft [indiscernible] at this time.
>> yes, sir.
>> we hope to have the interviews on the 21st of September.
>> hopefully since we are all here already.
>> right.
>> fine with me.
>> five it will take all afternoon.
>> yeah.
>> it wouldn't be as hectic with the folks coming in on the
hospital district which I remember was what, 11 come in on that, so this is
five. We were just blown away by the exceptional qualities of those that chose
to apply with us. But we have shh wonderful people that we think -- some wonderful
people that we think are on that shorted list.
>> do we need to include in our report we would ask to close
the posting, the position.
>> I think so.
>> okay. That's the motion, too, that we close the -- close
the posting for the position. And that we schedule on Tuesday, September 21st,
hopefully that's an afternoon gig, the interviewing of the five folks identified
for short listing.
>> second.
>> discussion? All in favor? That passes by unanimous vote.
