Travis County Commissioners Court
August 31, 2004
Item 6
Number 6, speaking of combined charities, is to announce the beginning of
the Travis County combined charities drive for calendar year 2004. In the
fall of each year, we basically kick off this program and we spend September,
October and November and additional time if we need it trying to raise as
much money as we can for the non-profits that serve our residents. And so
I would simply like to announce that last year the executive managers and
coordinators did an outstanding job of serving as coordinators for us. And
I understand that they have so much fun that they wish to do the same thing
this year. So next week I will post an appropriate item to allow us to appoint
individuals to coordinate or chair the effort for us. Also next year I will
have the amount of money that we generated last year, the year before. Times
have been kind of tough for some residents and so I think we probably don't
raise as much money now as we did, say, four, five years ago. But I still
think we do an outstanding job and we really have all of our residents and
Travis County employees to thank. Is diane fanning here? Ms. Fanning is. She
assisted us last yearment and last year you were contracted with united way.
>> no, I was the point person representing the fed raeugsz
ations that were not managing the campaign and this year all the federations
including the united way has had someone else to manage it so my [inaudible].
>> and you will be working with us this year.
>> yes, I did.
>> okay. So what I hope to do is put together a little sort
of written summary of a strategy for '04, and hopefully share that with the
court by Friday so if you have any ideas, feel free either to get them to
me or bring them to court on Tuesday and we can get this kicked off. Cecelia
burke has always been real helpful as well as cheryl brown from my office.
Chief dan richards from the sheriff's office was really outstanding in this
effort when he was a full-time employee of Travis County. And he has been
retired now, what, a couple years?
>> at least.
>> so I think he should be pretty close to boredom and looking
for something to do.
>> [inaudible] tract for judge [inaudible].
>> we need to contact former chief richards and see if we
can get him engaged in this effort and help us out this year. Anything else
on this? I just thought I would announce it and try to get county staff and
the Commissioners court to thinking about the effort.
>> are we going to have a kickoff fair like we normally do,
judge, in terms of an event or what are we thinking on that?
>> hopefully the committee can plan. That I know at some
point -- I think we raised a little money. People seem to have a lot of fun.
And as far as I know it's been a good effort, but we have really empowered
the committee to make a lot of these very important decisions, and so I think
we ought to do it this year. And my hope is they would continue that. I've
always looked forward to it.
>> the dunking booth is particularly popular right after
budget. And Gerald is our ringer. He can get -- he can get a bullseye.
>> anything else on number 6? By the way, the executive managers
and coordinators may want to voice their support of this -- of my recommendation
for their objection. I will not -- I don't want to leave the impression that
it will do a whole lot of good, but I would like to hear them between now
and next Tuesday. If there's nothing else on 6, we'll move on.
