Number 4 is to approve resolution honoring the river city youth foundation on its 21st annual youth recognition day awards ceremony.
>> and speaking of women doing great things in the community, mona gonzalez is coming up for this resolution for the river city youth foundation. Whereas the youth of our community are a precious resource and play a vital role in the future of our community and whereas river city youth foundation has been instrumental in producing our future professionals for the next millennium and whereas river city youth foundation fosters positive participation in school, academic achievement, positive self image, personal growth, and good citizenship in its participants and whereas river city youth foundation honored participants from Travis County at their youth ceremony on Friday, may 24th. 2004 and whereas some of the categories of honorees include youth of the year, parents of the year, family of the year, volunteer of the year, supporter of the year, fellow collaborator of the year, and unsung hero and whereas all award recipients are to be commended and congratulated for their enthusiasm and diligence in striving to play a positive role in our community, now therefore be it resolved that we, the Travis County Commissioner's court salute the river city youth foundation for their work with children and their commitment to the betterment of our community and the future of our youth. And I would move approval.
>> morning.
>> my name is robert martinez, I'm the president of the board, and on behalf of the board and agency just want to say thank you again for your continued support to our agency, river city youth. As you know, it is a success center. We are celebrating our 21st year, and again it's a place that the kids love and that the community really needs and we really appreciate it. Thank you so much.
>> thank you.
>> thank you. [ applause ]
>> well, #- if you asked me 21 years ago if we were going to be here, I don't know what I would have said but we're here today and the youth recognition, I have been asked why do youth need recognition, why did you start this tradition in Austin? And it's really pretty simple, look around you at these beautiful kids. Every year we want to recognize the accomplishments of our young people that live in high risk areas. We have done the youth recognition in a parking lot on south flores where we first got started that is now the little mexico restaurant. Margaret, I know that you started there.
>> I remember.
>> when you're not here.
>> I remember.
>> we've done it at recreation centers, churches, and recently over the last five years, saint edwards has allowed us to use their beautiful, beautiful center, it's just awesome, we do it with pride and love. I've heard it said before, ideas have a short self life. We must act on them before the exploration date. I think that's what we did with this idea and I'm glad we did it. I'm very, very thrilled to see our kids here today. I want them to be recognized. You've mentioned the categories and for the children that made it here today, now, remember, there's still exams going on right now. Today and tomorrow, school lets out tomorrow, so some of our kids are actually taking exams today and tomorrow, but the children that are here right now, I want you to raise your hand, nancy and gabby were our leaders of the year. Espinoza received two awards, the most friendly team and the future computer teacher. You know, we have a dell-funded computer lab. The next high or low tech company president. Niava is the most team spirited. He's the chair, the president, the head of our little soccer team. Vanessa perez is the most motivated child at river city youth foundation and that is a huge award and amber profetti is our team volunteer of the year. This young woman comes in on weekends and actually tutors and helps kids in our computer lab which is open 7 days a week and also with us today is the recipient of the chuck wynn service award, our very own edna. [ applause ] I promised I would make it short and it's very hard because you work all year long and this is our time to celebrate, but I will close in saying that, folks, you're told this again and again but I mean this from my heart. This has been one of the toughest economic years we've ever seen and we know that it takes more than just a good idea, okay, to make something like this work. Good ideas need landing gear as well as wings. You, Travis County Commissioners, along with many others in this community, have provided the landing gear for this organization to flourish and to have this kind of success. So thank you very much. On behalf of everyone.
>> thank y'all. [ applause ]
>> congratulations to all of you. All in favor? That passes by unanimous vote.
>> thank you.
