2. Approve proclamation recognizing "national police week" from may 9 through may 15, 2004 and "national peace officers' memorial day" on may 15th, 2004. And should I read it, constable?
>> good morning, Commissioners, county judge. I’m bob van, constable precinct 2, with me is sergeant mike varillo from my office. 20 years ago, the nation established national peace officer's week and national peace officer memorial day. And for many years now, the court has been very supportive of the law enforcement officers that work here for Travis County in passing this resolution. It is a two-way street. It allows us the opportunity to come to the court and thank you all for that support that you continue to show is. Show -- to show us.
>> it says whereas national peace officer's memorial day is may 15th and ceremonies are being held throughout the nation and here in Travis County honoring law enforcement officers who have been killed while serving their communities, whereas national police week is may 9 through 15, 2004, Travis County's numerous law enforcement professionals who work selflessly on behalf of its citizens regardless of peril or hazards to themselves, whereas these officers have safeguard and continue to safeguard the lives and property of Travis County residents, whereas by enforcing our laws these officers help provide freedom from fear and violence and civil disorder and whereas these men and women by their service and dedication have earned the gratitude of Travis County, the state of Texas, and this nation and certainly the Travis County Commissioners court. Now therefore be it resolved that we the Travis County Commissioners court do hereby proclaim may 15th as national peace officers memorial day and further proclaim the week of may 9th through 152004 as national police week in Travis County, which confers special recognition to all law enforcement peace officers employed by and in Travis County and I move approval.
>> second.
>> okay.
>> yes, sir. Didn't mean to cut you off.
>> that's all that I had to say, thank you.
>> we appreciate all that you all do. We do -- do you know how many peace officers we employ in Travis County.
>> no. I would think the court would know better than i. I know how many I employ.
>> not enough, I know that's the answer. [laughter]
>> we'll discuss that at budget time.
>> probably about 350.
>> the sheriff's office, about 350. [indiscernible]
>> it would allow me the opportunity to tell you there are park rangers, there are investigators for the county and district attorney's office, the fire marshal's office, constable, sheriff, quite a few, judge.
>> we appreciate all of you and all you do. Hazardous work, we feel a lot safer because you do it. All in favor? That passes by unanimous vote. And instead of a pay raise we have got a beautiful plaque [laughter]
