Item 4
4. Approve resolution honoring hilbert's burgers for 30 years of business in Austin, Texas.
>> thank you, judge. And I think that we have mr. Maldanado here as well as family if they want to join him here at the table who I i read the resolution. This is his wife, lucille and his daughters and --
>> my sons couldn't make it, they're working.
>> very good. Whereas hilbert who arrived from san antonio while contemplating his future decided to further his studies at the university of Texas in Austin in the early 60's, whereas joined by his high school sweetheart lucille decided to start his own franchise by expanding upon his own ideas of free delivery, homemade onion rings and whole wheat burns, whereas he single handedly opened the door for his business and founded hilbert's burgers in October of 1973, that's hill-bert. By five February nateing his name -- hive nateing his -- whereas he is a pioneer in the pridesmanship and quality served by his family owned and operated business takes center stage for accomplishing many firsts. Free delivery, jalapenos on cheeseburgers and we must not forget grandma's homemade hot sauce for the crispy tacos. Was they are the proud parents of four children, five grandchildren, paying attention to detail and have kept open the doors at hill-bert's burgers allowing for all four children to obtain college degrees, pursue other professional positions while continuing to work with the family business. Therefore be it resolved that we the Travis County Commissioners court do here by recognize and honor hilbert maldando for his 30 years to the Austin community. There will be a ceremony from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. At the 3003 north lamar location. We invite the citizens of Austin, surrounding areas to come out and bring your families. And I would move approval.
>> second.
>> good morning.
>> good morning. Good morning.
>> how are you doing?
>> judge, Commissioners court, thank you so much for taking the time, especially you, Margaret, for having this on the agenda. I'm very proud of the business. Equally proud, of course, of the family. And when you mentioned some of our food items, you need to be a little bit more passionate about that. [laughter] it's not as easy as it sounds. [indiscernible] onion rings [laughter]
>> speaking of that my segue to my wife, beautiful wife, who has been the cornerstone of the business. I went in -- for the young entrepreneurs out there. It's particularly hard to go into business alone, but it's not beyond of the reach of realm if you have the passion. You must,s I heard on the radio this morning, establish a niche, be happy with what you are doing, be passionate about what you are doing, have the support of your family, a good attorney, and a good banker. [laughter] and -- and that -- I haven't had to use the attorney as often as I have heard other people need to. I'm happy about that. Hopefully that's good. But thank you for telling us about this Sunday. We would like to have all of you there if you could. It's across the board a non-partisan, I could mention some names, but I won't, democrats and republicans alike. And come occupant and let your hair down, relax, maybe we can get a little song from Margaret out there. But for sure I'm very proud of my family, the accomplishments of our business. Hill-bert's burgers, one of the trivia question was I named it to con note partnership. That's a trivia question. Think about where that name came from. And who -- who was I really speaking of when I split my name up and said hill bert's burgers. A couple of long standing businesses that still exist today that use those names. So people thought that I was associated with those big businesses back then, that still exists today, that's going to be it if they thought that I was part of that, that's how we got your business. I felt very confident if I got you in the front door I would keep you.
>> I thank my family again.
>> thank you.
>> thank you.
>> congratulations. [ applause ]
>> before you leave, you and your family, I mean, you and I have known each other.
>> we sure have.
>> a long time.
>> around the block a few times together.
>> lots of crossing of the ball diamonds.
>> comls Commissioner Davis.
>> but -- as well as Commissioner Davis.
>> I do want to say to you, lucille that you all are wonderful examples of what makes this country what it is today. I mean, I -- you know, really it is heart touching for me to have, you know, people like you, all of your family, that -- that really, you know, you are the hart and the soul of what -- the heart and the soul of what this is. To raise a family, you and I both know how difficult it is to run small businesses. We are the least and the last to get paid, a lot of times, and my hat is off to you and your family and you set a great example, I wish that we had many more thousands like you. Congratulations.
>> thank you very much, Gerald. Don't put it in the past. My dad was in business for 60 years in downtown san antonio. So we have another 30 to go. [laughter]
>> great.
>> I need to add something. I don't think people have -- [laughter] [inaudible - no mic] these people give thousands of dollars to charity every year. Their burgers are the best in town. These people give and give and give. They are out there selling burgers at parque zaragosa, helping kids in baseball, I picked up a gift certificate for mccallum high school, they give to lamar, mccallum, to the high schools, to anything that you ask these people to give. It's -- you know you are going to hear back from them. They give thousands of dollars and they have always, always given back to this community and they do it silently. It's -- that's been my pleasure to know this family. Not just their food. But their heart. [laughter]
>> thank you.
>> it has been silent until now, so -- [laughter]
>> we will have to screen our calls a little bit more. There is some rhyme or reason to our giving.
>> I'm sorry?
>> go ahead.
>> we are very, very compassionate about children, about the elderly, and about education. Ommon thread there. Phone, if we can help, we will.
>> I would just like to say that the relationship between this family and my family go -- I mean, a long way back. I mean, children. And same school and everything else. But anyway, it's always been a good experience. And has been a pleasant -- has been a pleasure working with you. You have been such a vibrant part of the community for so long and have stayed there. You look around at how many business haves been here 30 years, I bet you can start counting on your fingers, not that many are still around. I think it's a clear example of how you do business, how you deal with the community, it's a classic example. I feel very honored to know you and your family. And it makes me feel real good. Thank you.
>> thank you very much, Commissioner. Thank you.
>> thanks very much.
>> thank you for having us.
>> thank you.
>> see you again.
>> all in favor? That passes by unanimous vote.
>> you are open for business today, right?
