Number 4 is to approve proclamation celebrating October 5 through 11, 2003 as "4-h week" in Travis County.
>> woe do have several persons here to receive this one. It reads whereas the youth and volunteers of any community are its greatest natural resource, whereas 4-h is the largest youth development organization in Texas, surpassing the one million mark in enrollment in 2001. Whereas 4-h in Travis County is an integral part of the development of over 20,000 new members in both rural and urban settings; whereas Travis County is home to one of the most innovative 4-h program in the nation in its 4-h capital program. Whereas 4-h is a partner between the Travis County Commissioners court and Texas cooperative extension and whereas 4-h has been helping you and adults -- youth and adults learn, grow and work together for 100 years. Now therefore be it -- we the Travis County Commissioners court do hereby proclaim October 5th through 112003vis cy and urge the people of this community to take advantage of the opportunity to become more aware of a special program which gives youth the chance to learn together and on their own as part of Travis County 4-h and to join us in celebrating the unique partnership between our county and the Texas a&m university system and I move approval.
>> second.
>> good morning.
>> good morning.
>> good morning.
>> we planned to have the courtroom full, but school gets in the way sometimes [laughter] we don't have as many kids as we would like to have here. We have a good representation. Let me do some brief introductions with some of the young people and the staff that we have here in support of 4-h this morning.
>> we do have a couple of school aged kids here that we were able to pull away from school. We have diadr and then zenobia, and they are going to make a small presentation to you shortly. But we certainly appreciate all that you have done for the 4-h program throughout the years and of course 4-h has continued to grow here in Travis County and we really appreciate all that you do to make our after-school program as well as our traditional programs successful.
>> one of the things that I want to point out and show special appreciation for was the support that we had this queer at our 4-h achievement banquet a couple of weeks ago. We actually had a majority of the Commissioners court members there, it was quite a thrill to have that kind of support, we do appreciate your continued support of 4-h, you all have been extremely supportive, extremely beneficial to 4-h and have allowed us to do the things that we hope that we are doing a good job of. We appreciate your support very much.
>> you are a witness. We were sitting separately and not discussing county business.
>> all at different tables, that's right.
>> but it was really a great event and wonderful evening and really, when you really sit down and listen to the young folks, you don't mind stepping aside when it's time for us to step aside and let them take the leadership role. I think this is really a great example of the future leadership of this community. Of course I'm really pleased to what I'm seeing this morning and what I witnessed out there in the community. Thank y'all.
>> thank you, Commissioner.
>> this is our first presentation without betty robertson. We miss her. But you all will continue on in her stead, I know. To do good work.
>> absolutely.
>> keep up the good work.
>> thank you all.
>> at this time, because you, too, are one in a million we have our two 4-h members here that are going to make a little presentation to you.
>> okay.
>> y'all didn't notice part of the proclamation was that there are over a million 4-h members in Texas, so that's the new slogan, one in a million.
>> thank you very much.
>> thank you.
>> give Commissioner Daugherty one here. Not punish him for being absent [laughter]
>> thanks very much.
>> thanks, y'all.
>> I think that I read something that -- that said about 4,000 kids in after school programs in Travis County.
>> yes, that's approximately --
>> approximate.
>> yes. Of course.
>> probably a lot more than that, but that's a conservative number. [laughter]
>> I haven't read -- yes. Actually, at woodrow we do have some of our prepared americorps members here that we are busy recruiting that would certainly help to us expand our program, we are looking for more numbers next year.
>> good. Keep up the good work.
>> thanks.
>> all in favor? That passes by unanimous vote. And we have this beautiful proclamation that you can carry with you.
>> thank you very much.
>> thanks Commissioner.
>> take care.
