2. Approve resolution encouraging all residents to support "lights on afterschool!" On October 9, 2003. And the resolution reads -- anybody here to receive this one?
>> yes.
>> okay. Come forward.
>> thank you, [laughter]
>> have a seat out there.
>> it reads: whereas the citizens of Travis County stand firmly committed to quality after school programs, because they provide a safe, friendly learning environment for our children that boosts their academic achievements, support working families by ensuring that their children are safe and productive after the regular school day ends, builds stronger communities by involving our students, parents, business leaders and adult volunteers in the lives of our young people and encourage families to become more effective partners in their children's education. Whereas after school providers in Travis County have provided significant leadership in the area of community involvement in the education and well-being of our youth. Grounded in the principle that quality after school programs are a critical link to helping our children become successful adults and whereas lights on after school, a national celebration of after school programs, on October 9th, 2003, promotes the critical importance of quality after school programs in the lives of children, their families and their communities, now be it resolved that we the Travis County Commissioners court enthusiastically endorse lights on after school and encourage the citizens of our community to participate in innovative after school activities that ensure that children are safe and productive which the school day ends. Further call on the citizens of Travis County on the day of October 9th, 2003, to assure that every child has access to a safe, friendly place where the lights are on after school. And I move approval.
>> second.
>> good morning.
>> good morning. No words?
>> oh --
>> that's important --
>> I am almost never speechless, but I am this morning. I apologize. Certainly we do support this and we appreciate your support for this outstanding opportunity to provide safe havens for children after school. Thank you.
>> thank you.
>> on record by word and action being supportive of after school programs. Big program planned Saturday at the capitol building.
>> right.
>> elected officials this past Saturday I'm referring to, October 9th is the day coming up, we want to be supportive.
>> right.
