Item 3
Number 3 approve a resolution dating may 4th through 102003 as national correctional officer week. Anybody else want to read it? You all like my reading. It reads -- sheriff, you didn't practice last night, did you?
>> no, sir.
>> whereas national correctional officer week is may 4th through 10th, 2003. And corrections officers who serve their communities through -- during this designated week. >> second.
>> thank you.
>> good morning.
>> good morning. I appreciate this recognition of the men and women who serve in our correctional facilities. I know that you members of court know, but I would ask the members of the public to realize that when you sigh with relief that the media reports say some really bad guy has been taken off the streets and put in jail, that these are the people who are expected to watch this person and to keep this person there and to keep this person safe until thinking to trial -- until they go to trial and also keep others safe from that person, not only out on the streets but in the jail. They do an extremely tough job. Which I think is often underappreciated, mostly because it's misunderstood. I think that -- that everyone would benefit quite frankly from having the experience of not being in jail. I don't advocate that. But at least spending some time alongside a -- a corrections officer to see the very difficult traffics that they do and the many roles that they perform in Travis County. I’m proud to serve with these men and women and I thank you for recognizing them.
>> thank you.
>> thank you.

>> we know all of you all, but we want your millions of fans out there in tv land to know that you are down here working hard.
>> plus you look far different from the last time we saw you at the retirement party for chief -- [laughter] [multiple voices]
>> we will leave it at that.
>> that's a don't ask don't tell one. [laughter]
>> all in favor? That passes by unanimous vote.
>> thank you, sir.
>> thank you all.
>> congratulations to all of you. [ applause ] let us know if there's anything else that we can do to help.
>> thank you, sheriff.
