>> [indiscernible] foundation of individual freedom and liberty is the body of law that governs, whereas the united states has been the citadel of individual liberty and a beacon of hope and opportunity for more than 200 years for millions who have sought our shores, whereas law day is a celebration of america and the rules of law and provides an opportunity to reexamine how we as a nation want our judiciary to function; whereas a fair and impartial judiciary protects american's rights and liberties under state and federal statutes and constitutions, whereas a fair and impartial judiciary requires an independent judiciary able to fulfill its legal obligations as the third branch of government in the american system of checks and balances, whereas during the month of may, the Travis County bar association will pause to recognize exceptional individuals from the association and the community for their commitment to law, the legal profession and our society, whereas the Travis County bar will also under students who participated in the 2003 law day essay and poster contest, illustrating the law day [indiscernible] celebrate your freedom, independent courts protect our liberties and whereas the Travis County Commissioners court joins the Travis County bar association in renewing our commitment to judicial independence, now therefore be it resolved that we the Travis County Commissioners court in conjunction with the Travis County bar association do hereby designate may 1, 2003 as law day in Travis County. And encourage all citizens, schools, businesses and news media, even the news media? [laughter]

>> good morning. Thank you, my name is laura [indiscernible] sharp, I’m president elect of the Travis County bar association. We thank you for your proclamation. We would like to ask that the public also celebrate with us law day in leading up to this we have a poster and essay contest which we are pleased to announce that our essay winner also won the state bar award this year. As part of this we will have a members luncheon on may first where we will be presenting a number of awards, including the distinguished lawyer awards to four of our well-respected and long-term attorneys whose carriers span over -- whose careers span over 30 years, tom Davis, pam giblin, our first female award winner, judge peat lowry and broaddus broaddusspivey. Outstanding award to [indiscernible] also the liberty bell award on behalf of the Austin young larry's association to -- ... Also be present at the luncheon. We also continue our celebration of the rule of law and law day on may 9th at fulmore school where there will be presentations all day long from the lawyer and children's committee regarding the law. And again we thank you for your proclamation.
