Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, July 12, 2011 (Agenda)
Item 26
26.
consider and take appropriate action on fourth annual Travis County history day on October 21, 2011.
>> good afternoon, judge and Commissioners.
>> good afternoon.
>> I'm director of records management communication resources, that includes the Travis County archives initiative.
I have two happy tasks here today.
the first is to remind Commissioners court that this will be the fourth annual Travis County history day.
the -- the earlier three annual events were all huge successes.
and my second happy task is to -- is to turn it over to our archivist christie who will tell you all about the event.
>> our topic for this year's history day is past and present elected officials.
over a thousand individuals have served as Travis County elected officials since its organization.
and we view this as an opportunity to thank and honor every one of these individuals, and to learn about the history of these offices.
so we invite all past and present elected officials to be attend.
there will be a couple of speakers.
we expect great turnout this year.
we already have a committee working very hard on this event.
if I could take a moment to recognize them.
our committee chair, judge Biscoe.
from the county clerk's office, jane smith.
robert, jillian, from the district clerk's office, meghan north from
>> [indiscernible], kimberly jamail, chris ...
>> [reading names] from the Travis County historical Commissioner, barry hutchinson, nancy hamilton and margie
>> [indiscernible]
>> the date of the event.
>> October 21st, lavaca 700.
>> this is -- may be our only opportunity to do this kind of program because they won't have started the buildout on the first floor of 700 lavaca.
we anticipate that we're going to need a lot of space for this events.
so this is our best opportunity to do this program that we've talked about doing for several years.
>> this will be our maiden voyage as utility liangs the first floor for -- utilizing our first floor for open space, that's wonderful.
>> that's right.
>> we do anticipate a much larger turnout than we've had in the past and we were hoping that it will be old home week for former elected officials and we generally want to give thanks to their service.
and we have a slight ultimate tearer motive if that we also want to make a pitch to all of these former officials that Travis County archives would like to be the repository for all of their papers.
>> I would like to request photographs from all past and present officials to include in the exhibits and be part of the archives collections as well.
>> we can hardly wait.
>> [laughter]
>> we are also hoping everyone will get along just fine.
>> [laughter] who's in charge of seating arrangements?
>> there's a pain ball tournament as part of it, right?
>> exactly.
paint ball.
>> yeah, pie fight.
>> red paint and blue paint.
>> right.
>> [laughter]
>> taking appropriate action is to approve?
>> indeed, judge, please.
>> the proposal.
>> move approval.
>> motion by Commissioner Gomez.
seconded by the judge.
discussion?
all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
>> thank you.
>> thank you.
>> we look forward to working with you.
>> okay.
