whereas Travis County is a community that includes over 107,500 citizens age 60 and older who contribute wisdom, insight and experience to help enrich and improve the lives of younger generations while strengthening the bonds between neighbors and creating a better place to live.
whereas Travis County and coming of age Austin metro recognize the value of enhancing our society by peaceproduct I feel engagingr adults in our community and whereas the older adults in Travis County should be commended for their royal in boyser ting the fiber of our neighborhood, cities, schools and organizations in our community reflecting a great diversity of backgrounds and capabilities.
and whereas our community can provide recognition and respect by enriching the quality of life for older adults by one inspiring older adults to explore their interests and strengthen communities through civic engagement, 2, providing services, technologies and support systems that allow older adults to foster and maintain connections within the community.
3, emphasizing the value of older adults by publicly recognizing their contributions to the diversity, strength and unity of our community.
and 4, offering unique and innovative opportunities for older adults to remain active, engaged, independent.
now therefore be it resolved by the Travis County Commissioners court that all citizens of Travis County are urged to observe may 2011 as older americans month in Travis County.
in recognition of the contributions and achievements of older adults who have enriched our community's quality of life and to the professionals, family members and volunteers who care tore them.
and I move approval.

thank you so much for honoring older americans in our community.
as you know, about a year ago we came to you with a presentation about coming of age which is a new approach to how we work with and recognize older citizens in our community.
and when I say older, I mean 50 and older.
and I'm not going to call anyone out, but --

>> [laughter] that covers quite a few of us in the room.
I'm also pleased to have, of course, fred lugo, who is our director of coming of age, and I'd like for him to introduce the chair of his coming of age advisory committee.

>> thank you for reading that proclamation.
certainly appreciate it and thank you for your words, deborah.
before I introduce our board chair, I just want to say I want to thank you for your support of coming up age.
we would like to present later, maybe this fall, an update on what worry doing, some very exciting things with this new program model that I think you will be very, very pleased with.
we transition from rsvp to coming of age and with that transition we have just found phenominal support in the community from the nonprofit sector and also from older adults in this community.
to my left is penny seitel, she is the president of the board of directors for coming of age.

we as the board of advisers are really, really excited.
you know, we know statistically that as our population ages, people want to remain involved.
we have that opportunity with coming of age, and we are broadening more and more we find that we can take things and tweak them to meet the needs of our population right here in Austin.
and it is exciting.
there are going to be so many wonderful things you are going to hear about and see so stay tuned.
