Travis County Commissioners Court
Tuesday, February 22, 2011,
Item 12
>> number 12 is to consider and take appropriate action on a request to appoint a citizen's board advisory committee for the 2011 Travis County burn referendum.
can I ask just one question?
some of those names were highlighted.
>> they were because they're dupe kates.
>> okay.
that's what that meant?
>> yes, sir.
some either worked for you or one of the Commissioners, put their name in the hat for both.
>> okay.
>> so what you should have received last week was an updated list of all of the applicants -- applications we received over the last three or four weeks.
about 84 applications, about 20 of those are duplications for the reason I just stated.
what we were hoping to accomplish today was for the Commissioner's court and the judge to appoint -- each of you appoint three from this list to work with t.n.r.
and facilities when the time comes to develop our list of projects for a November 8, 2011 bond referendum.
>> so what do we do today?
just submit our names that we feel that should serve on the bond committee today?
is this what you're looking for?
>> that's what I'm looking for, Commissioner.
>> okay.
so when we invited applications, we asked applicants to indicate what commission court member they were applying with?
>> yes, sir, we did.
>> okay.
all right.
so this should be on the record, I guess, somehow.
you were hoping we would just call these names out?
>> yes, judge, I was.
>> okay.
precinct one?
>> judge, I have george thorenson, john williams and thomas fricksinger.
those three persons would like to serve on the citizen advisory bond committee.
>> okay.
precinct two?
>> for precinct two, nicole francois, jeffrey travilian and mazing pool of folks.
>> a lot of folks.
>> three?
>> yes.
I had an amazing list of folks as well, all very well qualified.
and in my efforts, my choices, I tried since there's 48% of the county in my precinct, to make geographic choices.
so I'd like to appoint mark taylor everett from the largo vista area, dr. Lay naftalen from the -- and carolyn vogel from the south Austin part of my precinct.
>> precinct four?
>> precinct four, -- puentes, joe giselman and -- well, she's not on here and I was assured she was on here.
rosario sarves?
>> I have her on this list here.
>> it's not on my list.
>> we extended the deadline to Friday at 12:00 noon.
did that application come in before the deadline?
>> actually for this committee it was last Tuesday at 5:00.
but this one did come in before that.
we have it on this here.
>> the computers were down when she submitted so we asked her to resubmit.
>> okay.
do I have her on this list, though.
>> thanks.
>> let me indicate celia israel, terrence erian, and that will leave me with one after I learn a little bit more about the others.
I guess our goal would be as best we can to get a cross-section of our community, different backgrounds represented on there?
>> it would be good.
>> terrence erian, that's the attorney, right?
>> yes, sir, it is.
>> let me hold my one back.
let me keep an ace in the hole there.
I may be able to make it later today, although why don't I do it on next Tuesday?
>> okay.
thank you.
>> your goal is to convene the committee when?
>> we are going to try to set up a meeting next week with these folks.
introductions, get them thinking about their bylaws and how frequently they want to meet and where.
>> okay.
and I'm the only one with one short, right?
>> that's correct.
>> okay.
thank you all much.
>> thanks very much.
>> thank you.
>> my preference is to take 14 this afternoon.
anybody here on 14?
I need to make a phone call over lunch is the reason for that.
But on 12 if we can call that one back up as indicated, I would.
knell penned rij is the one that I would like to no, ma'am nate as one -- nominate as my third one.
nell pennedridge.
>> if there's no objection, we'll bring back up item number 12 that we kind of left pending so the county judge could add his third one, who is nell pendridge and I say let's approve those 15 and the 14 others that we listed this morning when we called up item 12.
seconded by Commissioner Gomez.
>> judge, along with that, we had such a significant amount of interest that person showed in this selection process, there were a bunch of names that we looked at all across the board.
it would be good if there's some kind of way that we can notify, have tnr to notify those people to thank them for their interest in wanting to serve, but not only that, but also participate in the public hearings that will be conducted throughout the county during this process.
I mean, because you really -- volunteer efforts like that, you really are giving up a lot of your time and interest.
I think they need to be commended for those persons who were willing to do that.
so I would like to -- maybe alert tnr if that could be part of the motion to just thank those folks and keep their interest involved at a high level where they may be wanting to participate in the public hearings.
>> I ditto that.
we were quite fortunate to have so many interested.
>> it was a lot, man.
>> unfortunately, though, more than 15 the committee may well be unwieldy.
did we have alternates last time?
>> no.
>> no.
>> we had pretty good attendance, right?
>> yes, sir.
>> so if we find attendance lacking, let us know and we'll move accordingly.
okay?
