Travis County Commissioners Court
March 30, 2010,
Item 1
We are waiting on the delivery of the original for item number one.
one is to approve the proclamation declaring the month of April, 2010, as "light of hope national child abuse awareness month" in Travis County.
and if you would come forth please on this item.
my staff assures me the original will be delivered before we complete our discussion.
should I read the proclamation.
>> yes, sir, police.
>> it reads whereas a south is judged now how to treats its most powerful members but how it protects its most vulnerable members.
every child has a right to live in good health, learn and grow in a safe environment, receive care and protection and develop a positive self image.
whereas light of hope began several years ago as a candle light ceremony commemorating April as child abuse awareness month, it continues through the Travis County sheriff's office and local service organizations unified by the mission of protecting children.
whereas surveys have shown the majority of americans believes that everyone should play a role in stopping child abuse, many people admit to witnessing child abuse and doing nothing about it.
the reasons for not reporting abuse include not knowing where to call and incorrect assumption what will happen once a report is made to police or a child protective services agency.
whereas last year child protective services found that 1,773 Travis County children were abused or neglected, and 368 children were removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect.
also as of the end of December 2009, there were 392 children from Travis County in foster care.
whereas child abuse, like any other, like any type of violence does not discriminate, it occurs within any ethnic, religious and socioeconomic group, our entire community must increase ins awareness or present every day problems and its impact on children.
and we are about two-thirds of 9 way through.
whereas on Tuesday, April 6, that's next Tuesday, 2010, from 5:30 to 7:00, the Travis County sheriff's office, Texas department of family and protective services along with other community partners will hold our light of hope celebration at the Austin community college east side campus, 3401 weberville road.
the theme for this year's child abuse awareness month is, "educating and empowering parents." whereas child abuse prevention month is the perfect opportunity to come together with light of hope and the Travis County sheriff's office to promote the prevention of child abuse and neglect, increase the understanding of its causes and increase the community, encourage the community to use available resources to protect Travis County children, and whereas when we provide for our children, we provide for their future and our future, as well.
together as a community, we can truly make a difference.
now therefore be it resolved that we, the members of the Travis County Commissioners court declare the month of April as "light of hope national child abuse awareness month" and encourage all residents to support light of hope and the Travis County sheriff's office in the crusade to end child abuse and a winded county judge moved approval.
how you all doing?
comments?
>> thank you very much, judge, Commissioners.
i'm here from the Travis County sheriff's office involved in many, many projects but this is one project we do every year that is very, very near and dear to my heart that I love and appreciate.
>> derrick, where do you find the time to be a sheriff's deputy, you're involved in so many projects.
>> don't tell the sheriff but I don't do a lot of stuff he tell me to do so I find time.
we have proclamations every year and you so graciously read them, no matter how long they are, and we appreciate it.
this year, our partners with Austin children's shelter is here and I want her to accept it on their behalf.
>> I'm excited to be here, it is another opportunity for the Austin's children's shelter to get in front of the families in the community and share about the plight of the most vulnerable children.
we're on the far spectrum of care.
we're taking care of those that have fallen through the cracks and are the most injures and in the most crisis.
and we understand now that we've expanded to a new campus, a newer development.
we're also expanding our program services into family intervention and that's huge.
and the light of hope offers us an opportunity to share these new services available with other providers.
and we invite you to join us on Tuesday, April 6, and we also, you have -- you're welcome to the shelter any time to see this incredible new resource to the community.
>> thank you.
>> thank you.
>> thank you, we appreciate all you do.
all in favor?
that passes by a unanimous vote.
if you would wait for us five minutes, a member of my staff will come down and get this and make a copy for the county clerk.
since the clerk is here today, we ought to follow the policy.
>> [laughter]
>> thank you so much for all you're doing.
