receive status report and comments from manos de cristo regarding the use of county owned property at 5335 airport boulevard for the back-to-school project from August 3 through 14, 2009.
good morning.

>> good morning, good morning, judge.
i'm kelly page with the Travis County sheriff's office, community outreach unit.
i wanted to take this opportunity to invite manos de cristo to the table to share with you our partnership and the gracious goodness of you all's heart about our back to school event.
it was a wonderful opportunity that gave us great warm fuzzy feelings all over and to see children smile and be so excited about getting clothes and backpacks and that you were a part of that it was a great opportunity.
before I turn it over to our officer, deputy galloway and james kitchens, they also helped us and I would like for deputy galloway to say a few words.

>>

>> [inaudible - no mic]

>> we will need you on the microphone, please.

>> thank you.
i'm assigned to the community service outreach unit.
real briefly, because of the work that manos de cristo do in the community and with the community, the sheriff's office has decided to make you one of our benefactors of our sheriff's shootout memorial day basketball tournament may 28th through 30th, 2010.

>> thank you.

>> we are honored.

>> [ applause ]

>> now I would like to turn it over to judy, their outreach coordinator, to introduce the members of her group.

>>

>> [inaudible - no mic]

>> hello, how are you all this morning, thanks for having you back, so excited to be here with you all, introduce to you people that you may not have seen last time in talking to you about this, who are equally excited just as happy as the rest of us here to visit with you.
all the way at the end is Karen green and she is our education coordinator and she was a tremendous help during back to school organizing 400 plus volunteers.
along with counting like 35,000 plus pieces of school supplies and keeping everything on track for us.
then next to her seated is lee polson our board president.
he has just been so wonderful about getting things like going for us and being a part of it, of course.
right here we have our executive director, who I am sure remember, julie, what has again been a wonderful, wonderful part of us.
right here next to us is shannon Moore, our new fund development director who also helped tremendously with back to school.
i'm so sorry, and sneaky back, there tom scott, one of our board members, he was also a huge, huge part of -- of back to school and getting everything together with us.
lots of other events as well.
so that is manos right here.
thank you.
go ahead.

>> we're going to have just a short presentation for you guys so that you really realize the impact that was made.
so you will see on this slide here that the total number of children was served as 2,221 children.
can you repeat that number.

>> 2,221 children.

>> 2,221?

>> yes.
our goal was 2,000.
we went over that.
bomb bomb.
you went above that, great.

>> t.
tremendous help in that.
the grade levels we serve every year are prek through fifth grade.
however, this year because we had such ample space, tons of in-kind donations come in at the last minutes for the backpacks and extra school supplies, we were able to serve some of their siblings on the last couple of days as well.
country of birth, obviously, we just got so many countries there.
not only in the united states, but africa, burma, congo, el salvador, guatemala, guinea, honduras, middle eastern, central american, south american countries as well.
a huge range of children served.
right after this, you will see a lovely slide show.

>> [ _ music playing __ ], then here we go.

>> [ _ music playing __ ]

>> [one moment please for change in captioners] and from the voices of the volunteers that came, they all said, you know, while we've done this for many years, it was in a much more relaxed atmosphere and we also had over 400 volunteers to help us with this program.
and so we want to make sure that you know how extremely grateful manos de cristo is.
thank you.

>> you're quite welcome.

>> and we don't want you all to forget us, so --

>> we won't.

>> so we have some of the children and some of the staff signed pictures for you all.

>> they make frames.
isn't that cute!.

>> thank you.
that is so beautiful.

>> I know.
what a gallery.

>> that is so cute.

>> I don't know if the camera can see this.

>> thank you very much.

>> thank you.

>> thank you so much.
appreciate it.

>> well, I went out there just to see how it was all set up, and it really, really looked very efficient and so I can see why you exceeded your goal and it's just a fantastic project.

>> thank you so much.
thank you.

>> beautiful.

>> it was wonderful.
and as you can see, all those children were so happy and so thrilled and it was in huge part to you all.
thank you so much.
it was so comfortable.
our families were just able to relax.
there -- there -- the children's attitudes were -- they've always been great, but they weren't cramped, they weren't crunched, they weren't herded so they were very relaxed and overjoyed.
thank you so much.
i'm so glad you were able to come by and check out the facility because it was so exciting to experience that.
as julie had mentioned before, our volunteers were so thankful and shocked and happy with the way everything was.
because if you can imagine 400 volunteers or even 100 volunteers cramped in one small space all day, it gets crazy with the children.
but it was beautiful.
thank you.

>> it was my first year seeing this and it was amazing.
i cannot imagine how it was done before and thank you so much for the facility.
it was incredible and it would no have happened without you.

>> great job.
great results.

>> thank you.

>> [applause]

>> one quick announcement just kind of off subject.
the sheriff's office is hosting its first annual bowling tournament, and I don't know where I heard this, but I heard from somewhere, from someone, that the judge and the Commissioners are outstanding bowlers.
we want to invite you to participate in the tournament as well.

>> thank you.

>> thank you.

>> [applause]

>> okay.
okay.

>> at dart bowl?
that's a perfect spot.
i love the dart bowl.
thanks so much.

>> two items added to the consent motion, but the -- could have been added but the judge overlooked them.
