Travis County Commissioners Court
September 15, 2009,
Item 3
3.
consider and take appropriate action regarding the prohibition of outdoor burning in the unincorporated areas of Travis County.
>> good morning, judge, Commissioners, tony callaway with the Travis County fire marshal's office, you see a big smile on my face today.
we are ecstatic over the current weather conditions we experienced.
>>
>> [indiscernible]
>> yes, sir, they were.
>> sorry.
>> for a further outlook we're looking at a possibility of rain Saturday through Monday.
so continue to pray for that.
our wind is around five miles an hour and our highs are around the mid 80s.
so we're hoping that -- that we're going to continue to have a low kdbi for the remainder of this next week.
five day outcast shows us the fire danger is low, the lowest that you can be in the measure of that, the 14 day outlook continues to remain under 500 for kbdi.
>> what's the current kdi
>> [sic]
>> the average -- the median average sitting right at 445.
we're in an interesting situation with our county being as large as it is where we have some areas as low as 10, we have a few pockets of 643.
very small pockets, but the median average is 445.
14 day outlook is that we will continue to remain under that 500 index.
so -- pete baldwin, traviscounty emer.
the recommendation is that we lift the outdoor burning ban.
we feel like we're good for at least 10 days, 14 days, we will bring it back once we see that kbdi start rising.
if we see it necessary.
but the order of which -- in which the court uses to lift the ban, it has been reviewed by legal and we have two copies and the judge's signature file and it would be our recommendation to the court that we lift out the burning ban.
>> move that we follow the recommendation.
>> second.
>> and have it back on again in two weeks and if we don't need it then, during the agenda setting meeting the Wednesday before, we will make that decision.
>> yes, sir.
>> any more comments?
>> the drought is not over, but the burn ban is lifted.
>> very good point.
>> the drought is not over.
>> we continue to caution people if they do decide to burn, they still be required to utilize a tceq burn regulations and if they have any questions or needs, just contact our office.
and we'll assist them through that process.
we have been shocked with the greenup that we've had.
one of the things that we're concerned with is by the time we got rain it would be so late in the season that most of the vegetation would be dead and we would not see the green up, but we have seen that in the last week which is nice.
we do caution people if they are going to choose to burn some of the stuff they've been sitting on, to contact us, we will assist them with that as well as the local fire departments will help them with that.
>> could you give the public your telephone number for the tceq regulations.
>> 854-4621 is our main number, we will walk them through that process.
we can either send them that to them directly or walk them through the website for tceq.
unfortunately tceq at this time does not have a number they give out that has live assistance for that.
we have assist the citizens of Travis County through that process.
>> number again?
>> 854-4621.
>> thank you.
>> yes, sir.
>> all in favor?
that passes by unanimous vote.
>> thank you very much.
