Travis County Commissioners Court
July 14, 2009,
Item 3
Number 3 is consider and take appropriate action regarding the prohibition of outdoor burning in the unincorporated areas of Travis County.
>> good morning, pete baldwin, Travis County emergency management coordinator and travis callaghan.
we come back because the agenda item has been posted so we can review each week.
we don't make recommendation for any changes out.
as everyone is aware and you just heard frank from Travis County e.m.s.
talking about the heat.
we've been under tremendous heat and dry conditions and right now everything is just tinderbox.
we did send resources into hays county yesterday at their request on that fire that went on -- excuse me -- down there.
luckily we are not seeing that many fires running here in Travis County.
a few small ones.
personally I've seen this in the past.
i've been here long enough I've weathered a few of these, no pun intended, but I think the fact is it's the heat and the dry conditions that keep people inside.
they just can't be outside conducting activities like they normally would and they are also acutely aware.
so I really and truly think that actually contributes to the decline in the number of fires that we're seeing.
but it only takes one to get started because of the way the fuel conditions are that we would be in a lot of trouble.
our recommendation from office of emergency management and fire marshal's office is we take no action and leave it in place.
>> by taking no action we leave in place the order prohibiting outdoor burning.
questions, comments?
thank you very much.
>> thank you, sir.
>> thank you.
