Travis County Commissioners Court
May 19, 2009,
Item 4
>> item no.
4 approve resolution recognizing the 37th year of the retired and senior the retired and senior volunteer program (rsvp).
is fred lugar here?
>> doesn't look like it.
>> all right.
what this resolution does is set out several critical facts.
last year, alone, we had 1,000 110 local rsvp volunteers.
1,110 local.
they contributed more than 268,234 volunteer hours of service to 144 non-profit organizations.
and if we were to pay them -- oops.
>> [laughter] should I read it?
>> yes, please.
>> all right.
it reads whereas one of our nation's most precious natural resources is the collective experience and abilities of our older citizens, whereas the Travis County retired senior volunteer program, rsvp meets critical community needs by recruiting and placing older adults into volunteer positions at local non-profit faith based non-proper pretty terri health care and -- proprietary health care and agencies, addressing some of our communities most critical needs in the areas of health education, social services, public safety and the environment, whereas last year alone 1,110 local rsvp volunteers contributed more than 268,234 volunteer hours of service to 144 non-profit organizations and agencies throughout Travis County; whereas in fy 2008 the value of services donated by rsvp volunteers produced a 12-fold return to the taxpayers of Travis County.
an impact that translated to an added value of $4,122,756.
whereas rsvp offers opportunities for people aged 55 and older, that -- that threshold for senior status is -- keep dropping lower and lower isn't it?
55 and over to actively participate in the their communities for significant and meaningful volunteer service.
whereas through volunteerism rsvp provides an avenue to live a longer, healthier life.
whereas the corporation of national and community service has acknowledged Travis County rsvp as a state leader in the areas of volunteer management and program development.
whereas the month of may is recognized nationally as older americans month and whereas this is the 37th annual -- 37 anniversary of the rsvp program in Travis County.
now therefore it be resolved that the Travis County Commissioners court urges all citizens to focus achievement on the rsvp volunteers in recognition of their outstanding service.
>> move approval.
>> second.
>> good morning, sherri flemming executive manager for health and human services and veterans service.
we certainly appreciate this recognition for the retired senior volunteer program.
as the court is very much aware, this program provides an incredible service to our community and with the increased demand that our social services partners are seeing in our community at this particular time, we know that -- that their rsvp volunteers are providing an incredible amount of service helping them to serve the residents in our community.
we thank you for this recognition today and thank you also for your continued support of this program.
we know that the incredible experience that comes from the volunteers who work in this program represent a wealth of knowledge that if it were not for them, we would -- we would never be able to tap into that resource and that incredible -- incredible bank of knowledge that they have.
so we certainly appreciate all of their dedicated service and we thank you all for your support at this program.
