Travis County Commissioners Court
February 10, 2009, 2009
Item 32
>> 32 is to consider and take appropriate action on Travis County's appointments to the city of Austin-Travis County sustainable food policy board.
last week we discussed basically making our appointments to this board, and are we ready to do that?
>> I am.
>> okay.
precinct 1?
>> yeah, judge.
after going through -- really -- first off let me say this to those persons that put in and applied for consideration to this very fine organization that's been presented here today, and there were some super applicants.
the 18 I looked at, staff looked at and reviewed and unfortunately we can only pick one.
that's the whole problem, judge, there's only one that we can pick out of all these great qualified folks.
so I landed on a person that I feel is going to do a real good job, and after reviewing all the applications, that person's name is richard pierce.
but I would like to thank all the ones that did put in for this.
i think it's great.
>> richard pierce?
>> yes.
>> precinct 2?
>> I echo Commissioner Davis' statements.
the response to this request were just massive.
a tremendous amount of interest out there.
and I had a very difficult time, was able to whittle it down to five and basically had to draw a straw to decide.
and david davenport is my nominee.
he's the president and ceo was capital area food bank.
he also was previously the executive director of the end hunger network.
he has a degree from Texas a&m university, has a long, long history and career in food access issues.
it's my pleasure to nominate him and I will ask him also to work with the four others who were just so strong that it was difficult to choose.
>> precinct 3?
>> I agree with everything that's been said so far.
and I'd like to say that I had a number of really excellent applicants.
the challenge is to find balance for the board and that's one of the things I looked at and considered in selecting my nominations, which is michelle murphy smith.
she has her ph.d in health and education from the university of Texas, is a registered dietician, registered nurse and has a plethora of experience to bring to this board.
>> precinct 4?
>> I ditto all the other comments.
i have selected paula mcdermott, who is also very qualified.
in addition to that, she works with elementary schools to the becker green classrooms steering committee, and I've been over to becker and they do a wonderful job with the children teaching them about sustainable foods and healthy foods.
so she's I think going to be -- going to bring wonderful balance to the -- to this policy board.
>> precinct 5?
or the county judge?
max elliott.
and katy kramer petrie.
katy kramer petrie.
and what I can do is gather up these resumes and any other materials we receive and present a copy to the clerk.
you don't have these yet, do you?
of the wups that we selected today, and if any residents wants to see all of them, we can make that information available also.
>> with that I move that we approve submission of this list of appointees to the city of Austin.
>> second.
>> first we approve it, then we submit the list to the city of Austin.
discussion?
all in favor?
noonan.
-- that passes by unanimous vote.
and should we get a nice short thank you note to all of the applicants?
they really were outstanding and it was difficult choices, but choices have to be made.
