January 27, 2009
Item 5
>> anybody here on number 5? That green build resolution? 5. Consider and take appropriate action regarding the Travis County green building resolution. I thought we ought to raise there as a brief discussion. A follow-up to our work session discussion, right?
>> correct.
>> okay.
>> good morning. Roger el khoury director for facility management department. This is the same that we -- that we did on the work session. And we presented to you at green building policy and -- and we would like to build all of our buildings with a leed silver as a minimum. We shoot for more, but that's the minimum that we would like to have the leed silver.
>> roger as part of the leed silver, are there any requirements in leed silver regarding on site recycling after a building is built.
>> absolutely. One part of the requirement is to minimize construction materials and consequently, you know, we will have less landfill, yes, as part of the requirement and we can get opponents from that. So we can increase our -- our point towards even -- even gold can meet those requirements.
>> great, in addition to demolition waste, recycling of demolition waste, is there anything after the building is built or -- or designing into the building -- a daily use recycling?
>> > after the building has been built, satisfied as a leed, then become like taking care of the building as parts of our green policy.
>> that goes beyond our green building policy into a green policy generally for a green initiative?
>> that's correct, this is operation of the building, yes, maintenance.
>> great news, thank you.
>> sure.
>> for those seeing this for the first time, what would be the benefits for Travis County residents of this green building policy?
>> > the benefit is many benefits, one is to get them to the program of recycling, that's one of them. Then also to build a sustainably buildings and energy efficiency. And we have a -- we have a we conserve a lot of resources like water, electricity and all, consequently we save money in the long process. Sure the green policy it will pay in the long term as in the -- in the life cycle of the buildings. We will have a printed cost at the beginning for the difference within conventional building and green building, but that -- but that -- the premium costs will be -- will have -- will have on investment I should say within five years. So I think there's lots of benefit, you know, in the agreeable building policy, this is not to become as a requirement become like a program everywhere else that's been using since green program. And -- we have -- other county, cities. They are -- they are using this -- green building, especially I can say it's city of Austin, they are the lead on that, they started in the year 2000. Most of their building they are building right now at minimum it's leed silver as a minimum.
>> one of those building in manor, it's leed silver, certificate feed as a leed silver.
>> any more discussion? Move approval.
>> second.
>> any discussion of the motion. All in favor? That passes by unanimous vote.
>> thank you.
>> thank you, roger.
