Travis County Commissioners Court
December 2, 2008
Item 5
>> number 5, receive status report on the Travis County combined charities campaign and recognize top contributors.
>> we are prepared to give you a report today, judge. We're bringing in the materials. For how much money we have raised for Travis County, heart of Travis County combined charities. As you know, we are having -- we're in tough financial times right now. But I think what happens is is that a lot of our employees recognize that now is even more important a time to try to be as giving as you can to those who are in need. Simply because of the fact that we're in tough times. We are going to be recognizing some people today who have done -- who have really gone beyond the pale, over and above what we've asked of them. They are our true heart of Travis County and we're going to recognize those folks, but let me start off with grand totals of where we are with the fundraising. In one time contributions, we have $17,425 and some cents. For payroll deductions we have $82,744 in payroll pledges. That's fabulous. The grand total so far is $100,169.24. Yes, thank you.
>> [applause] the -- obviously we're not completely finished with the fundraising yet and there is still opportunity to make a contribution either write a check or payroll deduction, we will take either and we certainly encourage those who have been busy doing other jobs like the election or planning for holidays. Now might be the time to do something that you've already been planning to do. The -- we will be taking contributions for the campaign up until December 15th. So we would encourage everybody who hasn't done anything yet, now you've got a last chance and we would certainly welcome you aboard. We will do a final report card for the court on December 16th and let you know where we are with all of our fundraising. There were 30 people, though, who went over and above, as I mentioned before, who gave $1,000 right off the bat, and what we would like to do is recognize this particularly giving, generous, wonderful group of people because one of the things that we promised them was that if they would be first in line to donate $1,000, then they get a free ipod. The ipods are special ipods. And what we want to do is recognize the folks who are going to receive a free ipod because they contributed $1,000 within the first few days of the campaign. These particular ipods -- it's on here. Let me go from this. We want to say thank you, but we -- and give everybody their ipods. The ipods all say on them "you are the heart of Travis County." but this is not just your regular run of the mill ipod. This is a red ipod. And that means a portion of the purchase price of this ipod went to the global fund to fight aids in africa since its introduction, product red has delivered over 100 million to the gobel fund and we just helped. Yesterday was global aids day and our contributions are right in line with the celebration for yesterday as well. For tax purposes, there's a specific amount, we'll let them figure that out, but we've given them all the information. What we would like to do is call these folks up so we can hand out these ipods. If you will come from my right across to the left. We have a couple of people who want to be aanonymous so not only were they giving, but they don't even want us to say thank you and we're comfortable with that. So, okay, first -- and these are in no particular order. But you will be surprised at I think who all comes through this line. Theresa goff. Are you here, theresa? Come forward, please.

>> [applause] you will all be on camera and this is going to be running and we're hoping not only that -- that other people see the generosity and follow in your footsteps because we are still trying to raise money for Travis County combined charities. Thank you this morning for being here and for your help and especially for those big bucks you gave.
>> [applause]
>> is it too late to become an ipod contributor? Do we have ipods left? You can pledge or make contribution, but you cannot receive an ipod at this time. But the deadline is December 15th, 2008. And I think our goal is around $150,000. So if we could raise an additional 50,000, that would be appreciated. Are we still waiting on our district attorney? Ms. Limb burg? Let's go to the consent items.
