Travis County Commissioners Court
April 8, 2008
Item 2
2. Consider and take appropriate action on an order prohibiting outdoor burning in the unincorporated areas of Travis County.
>> good morning, pete baldwin, Travis County emergency coordinator. Really no change in our status from next week. Our kdbi still remains in the 04 hundreds or mid to 4 hundreds, as we all know we try to use 500 as our benchmark. Southern winds returned, a lot more humidity in place right now. Our greenup is going well. We are not hearing that many fires being run, if any at all. So -- so our recommendation is that we do not reestablish the outdoor burning ban. There is one thing that I would like to -- to say, though, real quick because we've had some conversations in the past couple of weeks with individuals. Our outdoor burning ban only applies to the unincorporated areas. It does not apply to any incorporated jurisdiction. Those jurisdictions have the authority to ban outdoor burning. So -- so hopefully we can get that message out to clarify something.
>> so if you live within a city, then you should contact the city officials for guidance.
>> yes, sir.
>> so city of Pflugerville, city of Austin, city of manor. But if you live in an unincorporated area outside of the city, that's where Travis County's rules come into play.
>> that is our jurisdiction.
>> yes, sir.
>> all right. So no burn ban.
>> no, sir.
>> but burn safely if you burn outside.
>> absolutely.
>> thank you.
>> thank you.
