Item 5
Number five is to approve resolution urging all citizens to recognize memorial day. We have mr. Pope here to receive this one. Whereas there are in excess of 1 million veterans of all wars in which the united states have participate whod have lost their lives in defense of our country, whereas the Travis County Commissioner's court will never forget the ultimate sacrifice made by these brave men and women in defense of our democratic principles and the security of this great nation, whereas this annual event honors those americans who have given their lives for freedom during times of war as well as the dedicated service members who continue to guard against and combat terrorism around the world, it is particularly relevant given the heightened state of military activity resulting from the terrorist attack of September 11th, 2001, and the war in iraq. Whereas we owe a debt of gratitude to the many texans who have died protecting our way of life to which this event offers an opportunity to honor and remember their sacrifice. Whereas special tribute and respect should be extended to those Travis County employees called to duty and their families for the sacrifice they have made during the time of war and the devotion they have demonstrated in the protection of our nation and whereas it's appreciated that the patriotic unselfish and supreme sacrifice of those veterans should be recognized and commemorated. Pardon me. Now be it resolved by the Travis County Commissioner's court that all citizens of Travis County are urged to observe memorial day beginning may 25th through may 31, 2004, in Travis County with appropriate programs an activities focusing on the achievements of those who have served this great nation. And showing appreciation for their service and I move approval.
>> good morning.
>> good morning, judge. Good morning, Commissioners. On behalf of all of the veterans and their families in Travis County, I accept the resolution. I also would like to pay particular notion to we are finally recognizing the employees of Travis County for their -- those individuals who are being deployed and their family members. Memorial day also has a -- has an important part that this is a picture, this is faces on memorial day. As of March, 57 have lost their lives. Out of this, 13 are texans, one from Austin. So we look at this and we want to not only have the memorial day services, but understand that individual faces are truly behind this. The -- the memorial day weekend is full of activities, just a few have provided your office with the list of activity for memorial day. Saturday, the tejanos will have their ceremony out at the international cemetery. Sunday the oak hill vfw post 4443 will have their ceremony starting at 9:00 at the cemetery and the one what the Travis County service office is involved with is with Pflugerville national cemetery. That program will start at 11:00. If you're not able to make any of those programs, maybe you'll be interested in the weekend celebration that is around Austin on auditorium shore. I have several flyers that I would like to display and put out that individuals come by and pick up a copy of that. [baby crying]
>> again, if we are not able to participate in the memorial day ceremony, just remember on memorial day, may 31, at 3 p.m., Pause to remember american's fallen on the national moment of rememberance. This is going to be a national program at 3:00. This is the front page of the military service coalition newsletter. Okay? And that is all.
>> that is 3:00 on Monday the 3t?
>> sir?
>> 3:00 on Monday the 31st?
>> yes, just a moment of silence.
>> if we would like specifics about any of these particular activities could you leave with those with us?
>> as well, Monday morning at 10:00, the assumption cemetery, the catholic war veterans will have a ceremony.
>> ceremony. Yeah. They should be listed on the list of activities also.
>> okay.
>> I made an attempt to go to one of the vfw organizations to obtain calling cards that the county employees and any other individuals would like to obtain from our office, operation uplink. They can call our office, come by, focus the county employees that have loved ones oversees, they can obtain a calling card, send it to their loved one and they could have an ability to return a phone call back home.
>> give the number phone.
>> my phone number is 854-9340.
>> okay.
>> thank you, judge.
>> that passes by unanimous vote.
>> good to see you again.
>> thank y'all.
